Notes: The harp guitar is a stringed instrument with a history of well over two centuries. While there are several unrelated historical stringed instruments that have appropriated the name "harp-guitar" over the centuries, the term today is understood as the accepted vernacular to refer to a particular family of instruments defined as "A guitar, in any of its accepted forms, with any number of additional unstopped strings that can accommodate individual plucking."

Notes: The Epiphone Company was founded in 1873 by Anastasios Stathopoulos. It was purchased in 1957 by the Chicago Music Company, owners of the Gibson Guitar Corporation. Epiphone was Gibson's main rival in the archtop market and their quality archtops-the Emperor, Deluxe, Broadway and Triumph-rivaled (and some contend surpassed) those of Gibson. They also produced professional quality acoustics, basses and banjos.

Notes: The Fender Musicmaster was originally offered as a student guitar in 1956. However, it quickly caught on with student and professional players alike. Players such as Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, and Rory Gallagher have been spotted playing this unlikely guitar, possibly due to it's easily playable neck and undersized body.

Notes: Although introduced in 1952, the Gibson Les Paul didn't receive the official definition of "standard" until 1960. Built with a maple capped mahogany body and two PAF humbuckers, the standard would become the most desired and valuable electric guitar in history. Played by the likes of Duanne Allman and Jimmy Page, it has truly become the "standard" rock/blues/jazz instrument.

Notes: Released in 1934, the Super 400 was (and remains) the largest guitar that the Gibson Corporation had produced. During the first four years, it featured a hand engraved tailpiece and finger rest. The very early production models truss rod covers had engraved "L5 Super" (later were changed to 'Super 400'). In 1939, the upper bout was enlarged and the hand engraved tailpiece was replaced with the same one that is used to this day. The 'f' holes were enlarged, and a cutaway option was available. This was called the Super 400C. During the '50s, Gibson released the Super 400 CES. It had a slightly thicker top (to reduce feedback), two P-90 pickups, individual tone and volume controls, and a three way toggle switch. The P-90 pickups were replaced with Alnico V pickups, then in 1957, PAF humbucking pickups.

Notes: The L6S was designed by then-gibson-employee Bill Lawrence in 1972. He was asked to produce a "multi-sound system" under a very tight budget. The final production guitar was somewhat different from the Guitar he had in mind but "even with these changes, the early production L6-S was still an excellent performer". The popularity of the L-6S dropped rapidly after 1974, despite high profile endorsements from the likes of Al di Meola and Carlos Santana. All models were dropped from price lists in 1979.

Notes: Introduced in 1965, the martin D-35 featured a unique, 3-piece back. Brazilian rosewood was becoming harder to acquire and the three piece backs allowed the use of smaller pieces with no noticeable tone loss. A favorite of Elvis, the D-35 was outselling the popular D-28 model within a few years of it's release.

Notes: Since it's introduction in 1961, there have been numerous models that have carried the SG name. There have been "Standard" and "Jr" model, as well as the top of the line "Custom". Originally, the guitar was called Gibson Les Paul SG, but the "Les Paul" was dropped in late 1961. The SG has been used by many prominent musicians over the years, most notably Angus Young of AC/DC and Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath. Gibson has offered different variations and finishes on the basic SG body style and continues to manufacture the original designs as well as special editions.

Notes: The Framus guitar company was established in 1946 in Bavaria, Germany. By the mid '60s it was the largest and most respected guitar manufacturers in Europe, employing some 300 workers at its Bubenreuth location.
